Hi John: 

 

Thanks for your input. While I was getting the info together you requested,
I found the problem. I was disabling the txen bit as well as the TX
interrupt after sending out data on the usart1 TX pin. This was causing it
to revert to the standard port I/O format and going low between data
transmissions.

I've used USART1 on the ATmega128 many times without a problem. Could 

You post the source code of your setup, message send and character send 

(and ISR if you use one) functions? Then we can see if there's a problem.
