[Icc-avr] iccavr comport range/usb com port number

To get the com port assignment to a more realistic number the procedure
I use it to open device manager and expand the ports section, then look
at the ports available to you and compare this to the ports the hardware
has.
The reason for this is so that you can identify an available com port
without clashes with real physical devices.

Select the USB com port you want to change, if you are unsure which one
it is then unplug it and plug it back in while watching which port it
enumerates to.
Once you know which port it is then right click and select properties
and when the ensuing window pops up select "Port Settings", in this
window you need to select "Advanced..." and then in the bottom left of
the window there is a drop down of available ports, if you click on it,
it will show all ports up to 256, however, those that are already
utilized will show up like "Com1 (in use)" etc.
So, given that you know you only have one physical com port (COM1) you
can select any other com port, even the ones in use, and force this USB
serial port to that port after clicking on yes to this dialog box:

"This COM name is being used by another device (such as another com port
or modem). Using duplicate names can lead to inaccessible devices and
changed settings. Do you want to continue?"

The usual warnings apply to forcing use of a com port to one "in use",
but if you know what hardware you currently have installed or USB
devices plugged in then it would be safe to proceed.

If your computer is anything like mine you should see multiple entries
for com ports up to 10, even though you know they are not all currently
available, i.e. the USB or Bluetooth devices are not plugged in.

Hope this helps you regain control of your com ports.

Regards,

Andy.

Subject: [Icc-avr] iccavr comport range/usb com port number

I zapped the com1 on my iccavr machine... plugged it into the wrong
place... I'll try and use a USB serial port but it looks like its com9
or 10... can anyone think of a way to get the USB port down into the
com1-4 range? I guess I should uninstall the driver for com1... maybe
that would free it up? Anyway of getting more com port choices in the
terminal window Richard?
